Fictitious Business Name
Fictitious Business Name or Assumed Name or Trade Name
- For a corporation, a Fictitious
Business Name is business name under which it operates other than the name
under which it was incorporated. Generally, you must file a fictitious business
name certificate or assumed name certificate with the county clerk or county
recorder or both in the county where your principal place of business is
located. The laws in your state may also require you to publish a notice of your
fictitious business name in a local paper of general circulation on the same day
of the week for 4 consecutive weeks or so. If the name under which your company
was incorporated is John Doe Consulting, Inc., you do not need to file a fictitious
business name certificate in the name of John Doe Consulting, Inc.
